So we’re just hanging out in bed chatting and watching tv as a family. Mom, dad, and baby. She’s laughing at dad and then goes quiet and says “Haha” with a big smile on her face. So dad repeats “haha!” And she laughs and says it again! So we kept saying it and she repeated it a few times in between laughter and other jibber jabber. We’re so excited and confused if this is her first word?! I thought first words were usually “mama” or “dada”. And we weren’t expecting a first word for a few more months as she’s just a couple weeks shy of 6 months. Any thoughts?

Is “haha” a word or just a sound? I feel like my question doesn’t make sense but it makes sense in my head
*its 230am so my brain is mush lol

@deevangee,
right?? That’s what we were wondering, if it even counts as a word. She couldn’t stop saying it so we were laying there at 11 at night all just saying “haha” back and forth like some crazy people

I swear my baby says “hey” to me and my husband. Even caught it on video more than once !!! Yesterday I was folding laundry and he was in his little chair, looks at me smiles and says a faint little high pitched “heyyy”

my baby's first word was "hiii" lol. probably cause we say it so much to her haha. she still hasn't said mama at all or even close. but she'll say "hii", "hey", "yeah", "good" (minus the d but definitely what she's trying to say), "go", and she signs "again" while saying "geh"

@kdurb2007,
yep lol. many two mom families think it's hilarious that dada comes first. I'm Mommy and my wife is Mama, but I'm the primary caregiver. but I know that mama is easier than Mommy lol

Babies can mimic sounds right now but they don’t understand what they mean. I’d say she was just mimicking you both and had a great time doing it. My first two sons’ first word was dada and it was obvious they knew what they were saying. My third didn’t say any words (even though he made lots of sounds including dada and mama) until at 12 months he pointed at a ball and said “ball”. Basically it doesn’t count unless they know what the meaning is.
