Greenville News OBITUARIES MRS. EVIA G. OWINGS Mrs. Evia Gosnell Owings, 78, of 507 Crestwood Forest Apartments, Greenville, SC, died Tuesday, 1995 at Allen Bennett Hospital in Greer following a brief illness. Born March 20, 1916 in Greenville County, she was a daughter of the late Henry M.

and Elsie Gillard Gosnell and formerly worked at Jordon Oil Co. She was a Baptist. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Nellemae Jeter of Greenville, Mrs. Jewell Hall of Sylacauga, AL, and Mrs.

Barbara Taylor of Taylors; a son, John O. Owings of Greenville; nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and three grandchildren. GRAY MORTUARY PELZER, SC LEILA E. BROOKS Leila Ellison Brooks, 90, of Southern Oaks, Greenville, formerly of Auburn, NY, died Tuesday, March 14, 1995. Born January 3, 1905 in Cayuga, NY, she was a daughter of the late John and Kathryn Weber Ellison. Mrs. Brooks was of the Methodist faith and was a former WAC in the U.S.

Army. Her husband, Paul Brooks, died in 1990. Surviving are two granddaughters, Kim Ellery Bennett and Katherine Ellery Gonick both of Greer; a daughter-in-law, Ellery of Mauldin; two great-grandchildren, Robert Zachary Gonick and Samantha Rae Gonick both of Greer; a niece, Elizabeth Meyers; three nephews, Theodore, Robert and Harold Wood all of Auburn, NY. Mrs. Finley was a wife of the late Jim Finley. She was a daughter of the late Rev.

Frank and Elizabeth Chastain Murphree. She retired from teaching in Pickens County after 43 years. She taught first grade in the same classroom at Ambler Elementary School for 38 of those years. She was a member of Keowee Baptist Church, but had faithfully attended Grace United Methodist Church for 56 years, where she was a member of the Adult Fellowship Sunday School Class. Survivors include three brothers, Furman Murphree of Six Mile; Harold Murphree and Roy Murphree, both of Pickens; a sister, Ruby Dalton of Pickens.

ROBERT S. McCARTHY Mrs. Viola Julia McCarthy, 75, of 125 Ridgecrest Drive, Greenville, died Monday, March 13, 1995 at Autumn Care in Taylors following an extended illness. Born May 31, 1919 in Jamaica, NY, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Dorothy Hillenbrand Norris and came to Greenville in 1965. She was a secretary with Phillips Fibers before her retirment.

Mrs. McCarthy was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, and a volunteer for St. Francis Hospital Auxiliary. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Stuart McCarthy, who died October 16, 1979, and a daughter, Kathleen M.

Vaughn, who died August 11, 1994. Surviving are three grandsons, Ronald E. Vaughn, James E. Vaughn, and Jason S. McCarthy, all of Greenville, and a great-granddaughter, Alexandria N.

A native of Greenville County, he was a son of the late Andrew Jackson Stokes and the late Sallie Moon Stokes Hamby, a member of Mount Lebanon Baptist Church, retired employee of Homelite, and a US Army veteran of WW II.

Surviving are his wife, Velma Abercrombie Stokes of the home; one daughter, Jill Watson of Lyman; one son, Daryl Scott Stokes of Taylors; three sisters, Ellen Barnett of Greer, Florence Sloan of Greer and Eula Pittman of Greer; three grandchildren and one great grandchild. A native of Greenville daughter of the late William Joshua and Lillie Howard Howard, she was a homemaker and a member of Highland Baptist Church.

Mr. Chastain was born in Greenville, a son of the late James Aler and Lillie Mae Shirley Chastain. He was formerly employed at Woodside Mills in Easley and Liberty, and was a U.S.

Marine Veteran of W.W. II. Mr. Chastain was a member of Edgewood Church of Christ in Greenville. Surviving are his wife, Sara Pruitt Chastain of the home; two sons, William E.

'Bill' Chastain, Jr. of the home and James K. 'Jim' Chastain of Easley; three daughters, Nancy Youngblood, Susan King, and Janet Bowen, all of Easley; a brother, James Chastain of Greenville; two sisters, Thelma Chastain Coleman Davis and Lorene Holcombe, both of Greenville; and 14 grandchildren. Wesley Lafayette Flinn, 71, of 6917 White Horse Greenville, SC, died Monday, March 13, 1995 at Greenville Memorial Hospital following a period of declining health. He was born in Greenwood County June 15, 1923, a son of the late William L. and Rosa Stone Flinn. Mr. Flinn was a US Army Air Force Veteran of WW II and the Korean Conflict and retired as owner and operator of Flinn's Truck Stop in Ware Shoals.

He was a member of Berea First Baptist Church, the American Legion and the Hejaz Shrine. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Alma Locke Poole Flinn; a son, Wesley Lafayette Flinn, Jr. of Catawba, SC; a step-daughter, Mrs. Arletha Norris of Topsail Island, NC; a sister, Mrs.

Ruth Evans of Greenwood; a brother, Henry Clay Flinn of Columbia; seven grandchildren, Ryan Flinn, Ruth Flinn, Kathryn Flinn, Reid Flinn, Greg Norris, Henry J. Mr. Davis, a son of the late Archie and Frances Gilreath Davis, was reared at Piedmont, and received his B.S. Degree from Newberry College and his M.A. Degree in Education from Western Carolina College, Cullowhee, NC. He moved to Florida thirty seven years ago and retired in 1992 from the Duval County School System, where he was principal of Mayport Middle School.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Jacksonville Beach, FL and a former member of the First Baptist Church of Piedmont. He also was a member of the National Watch and Clock Association and Retired Duval County Administrators Association. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Doris 'Dottie' Calvert Davis of Neptune Beach, Fl and a sister, Mrs. Linda Davis Garrett of Piedmont, SC.

THE MACKEY MORTUARY, Century Drive Pulitzer winner to address group A former newspaper executive and Pulitzer Prize winner will speak to the Greenville branch of the English Speaking Union on April 1 at the Poinsett Club. Claude Sitton will speak on the topic of "America's Ambivalence About Freedom of The branch of the union is in its sixth year. Its objective is to make possible a higher level of proficiency in the teaching and use of the English language. Sitton, a senior history lecturer at Emory University, has worked as a United States information officer and press attache, The New York Times' chief southern correspondent and vice-president of The News and Observer Publishing Co. in Raleigh, N.C.

Sitton won a 1983 Pulitzer Prize for commentary in his column in The News and Observer. LULA MAE HOOD STANSELL Easley Mrs. Lula Mae Hood Stansell, 88, of 201 Front Street, Easley, wife of the late E. Walter Stansell, died at 8:16 A. M.

Wednesday, March 15, 1995 at her residence. Mrs. Stansell was born in Pickens County, and was a daughter of the late John Butler and Tempy Wood Hood. She retired from the Glenwood Division of Mayfair Mills and was a member of Glenwood Baptist Church where whe was a Sunday School Teacher for many years.
